About CostlyStates

CostlyStates is an editorial atlas of US cost of living. We exist because most "expensive states" lists you'll find online are scraped, undated, and built for ad clicks rather than relocation decisions.

Every figure on this site traces back to a primary source — the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Census Bureau, MERIC, the Tax Foundation, or Zillow's research portal. When the underlying data updates, this site updates with it.

We don't sell mortgages, moving services, or relocation packages. We don't take affiliate commissions. The site exists to be the cleanest, most readable answer to a single question: where in the US is it most expensive to live, and why?
